The “Mission: Inclusion” partnership of LIONS and Special Olympics, began in 2001 and has since expanded into a comprehensive global collaboration – Lions Clubs InternationalSpecial Olympics. LIONS International has awarded more than $28 million to Special Olympics since the partnership began.

Key Programme areas of the partnership :

1. Opening Eyes Vision Program . The program is proud to announce the active participation of students at the School of Medicine of European University Cyprus to this program. The Opening Eyes program provides free vision screenings at Special Olympics sporting events worldwide including Cyprus and has screened more than 300,000 athletes Lions International and Special Olympics | Lions Clubs International. Lions continues to support this program with more than $1 million annually, providing vision screening and glasses to athletes.
2. Health Services :The partnership includes Opening Eyes, Family Health Forums, and Healthy Hearing programs Special Olympics | Lions Clubs International. Services encompass vision care, health education, inclusive sports, leadership development, and youth activation.
3. Community impact

These partnerships have expanded and focus on the reach and scope of programs in health, inclusive sports and community building through creating inclusive development and social services

The training was co-organized by European University Cyprus and Euroguidance Cyprus, aiming to empower professionals in the fields of career counselling, vocational education, and social inclusion through contemporary knowledge, digital tools, and innovative practices aligned with the challenges of Industry 4.0. 

The initiative included two training phases: 

• The first phase involved 20 career guidance professionals from Spain, Italy, Romania, Greece, and Cyprus. 

• The second phase focused on career advisors working at the Public Employment Service offices in Cyprus, enhancing their capacity to provide high-quality, personalized, and socially equitable guidance services. 

The training material and methodology presented were developed by an interdisciplinary research team, under the scientific supervision of Assoc. Prof. Nikos Drosos from the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences at European University Cyprus. 

The content is based on the pioneering Career Guidance 4.0 methodology and covers areas such as: 

• Lifelong career development and adaptability skills in the digital era 

• Technological advancements and emerging forms of work 

• Digital tools and career management skills 

• Inclusion, equity, and sustainability in accessing future professions 

• Ethical standards and professional development in the field of counseling 

The training took place at the Multipurpose Center of Larnaca Municipality, marking Cyprus’s active contribution to shaping the next generation of career guidance professionals in Europe.

The Dean of the School of Dentistry, Professor Athanasios E. Athanasiou, emphasised that “the five years of study provided graduates with a wide range of educational, learning, personal, and social experiences, all of which have left a lasting impact on their lives and will shape their careers as new dentists and future healthcare providers. The Dentistry program—delivered in state-of-the-art campus facilities by faculty with extensive, long-standing international experience in dental education—equipped graduates with the skills to practice dentistry effectively and safely.”

The new graduates will now join the global dental community as highly qualified professionals, having trained in one of Europe’s top Dental Science programs. The School of Dentistry at European University Cyprus is an integral part of the university’s academic portfolio in Medical and Health Sciences, alongside Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, and other programmes that establish the institution as a leading medical academic centre.

The graduation ceremony also highlighted the multicultural character of the School, which attracts students from various countries and fosters a high-level international academic environment.

Distinguished guests attended the ceremony, including the Presidents of the Cyprus Dental Association, the Cyprus Dental Council, the Nicosia-Kyrenia Dental Association, the Dental Scientific Societies of Cyprus, the Director of Dental Services at the Ministry of Health, the Deans of the Dental Schools of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, as well as the graduates’ families and friends, and of course, the academic community of European University Cyprus.

The program was officially opened by Professor Andreas Efstathiou, Rector of European University Cyprus, and Professor Loizos Symeou, Vice Rector for Academic Affairs, who warmly greeted participants and emphasized the importance of international cooperation and innovation in higher education.

This year’s BIP brings together a dynamic and diverse cohort, including 22 students from SUNRISE partner universities in Italy, Germany, France, and Portugal, as well as a visiting instructor from Portugal. They are joined by 15 participants from China, representing Minjiang University and Nanjing University, all united by a shared interest in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning.

Throughout the week, participants will follow an intensive schedule of interactive lectures, hands-on workshops, and team-based AI project development, with sessions covering topics such as machine learning fundamentals, cybersecurity, intelligent multi-agent systems, and AI applications in the context of GDPR. All academic activities take place in Room 012, led by EUC faculty and invited experts from partner institutions.

Beyond academics, the program offers a vibrant extracurricular experience, featuring sports activities, a guided city tour of Nicosia, and cultural excursions across Cyprus. Designed to foster interdisciplinary learning, cross-cultural exchange, and collaborative innovation, the BIP Sunrise Summer School offers participants an engaging and enriching international experience.

The program will conclude with a graduation and certificate ceremony, celebrating the participants’ achievements and the successful completion of this inspiring international initiative.

Ο καθηγητής Αντρέας Ευσταθίου κατάγεται από την Πάφο και σπούδασε στο Queen Mary, University of London (1983-1989) όπου επίσης εργάστηκε ως μεταδιδακτορικός ερευνητής την περίοδο 1989-1992. Εργάστηκε επίσης στο University of Hertfordshire (1992-1995) και στο Imperial College London (1995-2001) πριν επιστρέψει στην Κύπρο. Έχει πάνω από 130 δημοσιεύσεις σε διεθνή επιστημονικά περιοδικά (h-index 53) συμπεριλαμβανομένων των περιοδικών Nature και Science. Από το 2021 υπηρετεί στη θέση του πρύτανη του πανεπιστημίου και παράλληλα από το 2023 στη θέση του αντιπροέδρου του Ιδρύματος Έρευνας και Καινοτομίας  (ΙδΕΚ). Το 2014 το ερευνητικό του έργο αναγνωρίστηκε με την ανάδειξή του σε Επιστήμονα της χρονιάς στα βραβεία Johnnie Walker Man Of The Year 2013.

Ο Δρ. Λοΐζος Συμεού είναι Καθηγητής Κοινωνιολογίας της Εκπαίδευσης και είναι ο εκλελεγμένος Αντιπρύτανης Ακαδημαϊκών Υποθέσεων του Ευρωπαϊκού Πανεπιστημίου Κύπρου από το 2018. Ο Δρ. Συμεού έλαβε το διδακτορικό του από το University of Cambridge του Ηνωμένου Βασιλείου, ενώ κατέχει μεταπτυχιακούς τίτλους από το ίδιο πανεπιστήμιο και το University of Sydney της Αυστραλίας. Οι διδακτορικές του σπουδές χρηματοδοτήθηκαν από το Overseas Research Scholarship (ORS) Award Scheme του Ηνωμένου Βασιλείου. Διετέλεσε πρώτος Πρόεδρος του Τμήματος Επιστημών της Αγωγής του Ευρωπαϊκού Πανεπιστημίου Κύπρου (2007-2012), ως Κοσμήτορας της Σχολής Τεχνών και Επιστημών της Αγωγής του Ευρωπαϊκού Πανεπιστημίου Κύπρου (2014-2017) και στη συνέχεια ως πρώτος Κοσμήτορας της Σχολής Επιστημών της Αγωγής, Ανθρωπιστικών και Κοινωνικών Επιστημών (2017-2018). Οι περιοχές ερευνητικού ενδιαφέροντός του περιλαμβάνουν ευρύτερα θέματα Κοινωνιολογίας της Εκπαίδευσης και εστιάζουν στη διερεύνηση μέσα από ποιοτικές μεθοδολογικές προσεγγίσεις του πώς το πολιτισμικό και κοινωνικό κεφάλαιο των παιδιών συνδέονται με τη σχολική επιτυχία. Οι ερευνητικές του δραστηριότητες έχουν χρηματοδοτηθεί τόσο από ευρωπαϊκούς όσο και εθνικούς οργανισμούς και έχει συντονίσει εθνικά και ευρωπαϊκά ερευνητικά προγράμματα, συμμετέχοντας επίσηςσε διακρατικές ερευνητικές ομάδες και δίκτυα. Έχει λάβει διεθνείς διακρίσεις, έχει εκδώσει μια μονογραφία, ενώ έχει δημοσιεύσει πέραν των 100 κεφαλαίων σε επιστημονικά βιβλία και άρθρα σε έγκριτα περιοδικά υψηλού αντίκτυπου.

Ο Δρ. Πάνος Παπαγεώργης είναι Καθηγητής Μοριακής Βιολογίας στο Ευρωπαϊκό Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου. Σπούδασε στο Εθνικό και Καποδιστριακό Πανεπιστήμιο Αθηνών (1998 – 2003) καθώς και στην Ιατρική Σχολή του Πανεπιστημίου της Βοστώνης (2003 – 2009). Εργάστηκε ως μεταδιδακτορικός ερευνητής στην Ιατρική Σχολή του Πανεπιστημίου Χάρβαρντ και στο Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου. Διετέλεσε Κοσμήτορας της Σχολής Θετικών Επιστημών του Ευρωπαϊκού Πανεπιστημίου Κύπρου από το 2018 μέχρι το 2023. Η έρευνα του επικεντρώνεται στους μοριακούς μηχανισμούς που εμπλέκονται στη μετάσταση του καρκίνου καθώς επίσης και στη στόχευση του μικροπεριβάλλοντος των όγκων για τη βελτίωση της ανοσοθεραπείας. Έχει πάνω από 60 δημοσιεύσεις σε επιστημονικά περιοδικά διεθνούς κύρους (h-index 31) συμπεριλαμβανομένων των περιοδικών Cancer Research, PNAS και Nature Communications. Το ερευνητικό του έργο αναγνωρίζεται διεθνώς με την ετήσια συμπερίληψη του, από το 2020 μέχρι σήμερα, στη λίστα του πανεπιστημίου Stanford που περιλαμβάνει το 2% των κορυφαίων επιστημόνων παγκοσμίως στο ερευνητικό τους πεδίο.

Κεντρικός ομιλητής στην τελετή ήταν ο καθ. Στυλιανός Αντωναράκης, Ομότιμος καθηγητής στο Πανεπιστήμιο της Γενεύης, μέλος της Ελβετικής Ακαδημίας Ιατρικών Επιστημών και της Ακαδημίας Αθηνών, ο οποίος στο χαιρετισμό του είπε προς τους απόφοιτους: «Σήμερα, γιορτάζουμε όχι μόνο το τέλος ενός ακαδημαϊκού ταξιδιού, αλλά την αρχή μιας ζωής γεμάτης εξερεύνηση, ανακάλυψη και αντίκτυπο. Σήμερα αναγνωρίζουμε τη σκληρή δουλειά, τα πρωινά και τα αργά βράδια που εστιάζουν στον στόχο, τις αμέτρητες αποτυχίες και τις αμέτρητες μικρές και μεγαλύτερες νίκες, μια σταδιακή μεταμόρφωση του εαυτού σας σε τι; σε αρχάριους στα μονοπάτια του πιο συναρπαστικού κόσμου της Επιστήμης.».

Ο Πρύτανης του Ευρωπαϊκού Πανεπιστημίου Κύπρου, καθ. Αντρέας Ευσταθίου   απευθύνθηκε  στους αποφοίτους με αυτά τα λόγια: «Απόφοιτοι, η σημερινή μέρα δεν σηματοδοτεί ένα τέλος, αλλά μια δυνατή αρχή. Έχετε κερδίσει κάτι περισσότερο από ένα πτυχίο – έχετε κερδίσει τη δύναμη να ονειρεύεστε, να ηγείστε και να αλλάζετε τον κόσμο. Συνεχίστε το πάθος σας, την επιμονή σας και τον σκοπό σας. Το μέλλον περιμένει το φως σας – λάμψτε έντονα και μην σταματάτε ποτέ να αναπτύσσεστε.».

Ο Πρύτανης στην ομιλία του αναφέρθηκε επίσης σε μερικά από τα πρόσφατα επιτεύγματα του Πανεπιστημίου: «Φέτος πετύχαμε νέο ρεκόρ συνολικών εγγραφών, που ξεπέρασε τους 11,000 φοιτητές και φοιτήτριες. Ξεκινήσαμε επίσης την Κτηνιατρική μας Σχολή, η οποία στεγάζεται στην πρόσφατα ολοκληρωμένη προσθήκη στην πανεπιστημιούπολή μας, και ένα συναρπαστικό ταξίδι με τους 8 εταίρους μας στη Συμμαχία Ευρωπαϊκών πανεπιστημίων SUNRISE».

Αξίζει να σημειωθεί πως δόθηκε συγκινητική ομιλία από τον αριστούχο απόφοιτο για τη Σχολή Θετικών Επιστημών, κ. Χρήστο Ριγόπουλο.
