3CE EU funded project on Cybercrime prevention concluded successfully
The Cyprus Cybercrime Center of Excellence (3CE) is a two (2) year research project co-funded by the Prevention of and Fight against Crime Programme of the European Union.
The project’s partners were the Cyprus Neuroscience & Technology Institute (coordinator), the Office of the Commissioner of Electronic Communications and Postal Regulation, the European University Cyprus, Aditess and the Office for Combating Cybercrime.
3CE provided short-term, highly focused and specialized training seminars on cybercrime-related issues for public and private sector participants. The courses facilitated the exchange and diffusion of tacit knowledge and expertise and familiarized participants with new technologies and tools while improving their day-to-day activities related to the Cybercrime area.
University courses on Cybercrime developed and delivered, as part of the project, to stakeholders while provided better understanding of the legal and technical elements of cybercrime for new generation scientists.
Courses will be made available under creative commons licensing terms for LEAs worldwide.
3CE aspires to become an exemplary Centre of Excellence in the area of Cybercrime by conducting research in relevant fields, focusing particularly on areas dealing with forensic analysis, intrusion detection systems of critical information infrastructures, and legal aspects of cybercrime. Leveraging existing collaborations with third countries (Lebanon, Armenia, Georgia, West Bank Gaza), and membership in CCI, 3CE aspires to serve more globally. Even though such collaborations will take place after the project's official completion, such actions and synergies will ensure the sustainability and continuous advancement of the Centre spreading its impact not only across Europe but more globally.
European University Cyprus, among other tasks, had been responsible for organizing and structuring from scratch a University Curriculum in order to develop, support and deliver a deeper understanding of the current legal EU standards as well as of the most up-to-date technical elements of Cybercrime for the new generation of scientists. This curriculum, which fulfils all EU educational requirements, has already been available as an elective course for IT- and Law- students since the Spring semester 2016. In addition, EUC has conducted a thorough research of the European Union legislation for cybercrime and especially for crimes conducted against children, i.e. child pornography via the internet.
The result of this research has been introduced to SSARS2016 Safety Conference in Polland (June 2016) and to the most respected legal Journal in Greek language, called Nomiko Vima, for which the publication date is currently pending. Lastly, EUC has provided dedicated training to three (3) target groups, namely (i) to the Judges of the Supreme Court of Cyprus, (ii) to Police Officers from the department against cybercrime of the Cypriot Police, and (iii) to Lawyers from all over Cyprus.
The project ended on the 30th of June 2016.
