The Ministers of Health and Education of Cyprus, Messrs George Pamborides and Kostas Kadis, as well as the chairpersons of House of Representatives’ Committees on Health and Education and the president of the Cyprus Medical Association addressed the opening ceremony of the 1st Annual Medical Students Meeting held on Saturday 13 February at European University Cyprus.

The Minister of Education Mr Kadis said the establishment of the School of Medicine currently in its third year of operation “has strengthened and contributed substantially the government’s effort to turn Cyprus into an international medical educational centre, particularly as it is now host to students from Germany, Austria, the United Kingdom, Australia, Israel and Ireland”.

The Minister of Health George Pamborides described the event as “an inspiring occasion dedicated to medical students for fostering knowledge and new ideas; for seizing opportunities and prospecting; for praising education, medical accomplishments and care”. He said that the event itself “reaffirmed that the School of Medicine of European University Cyprus stands as one of the finest academic health centers in the country”.

The chairperson of the House of Representatives Committee on Health, Mrs Stella Kyriakidou, said the parliament had set as its priority to support initiatives that promote Cyprus as a regional health hub adding that the School of Medicine of European University Cyprus is moving in that direction. On his part the chairperson of the House of Representatives Committee on Health Mr Nikos Nouris pointed out that “three years ago, the establishment of the School of Medicine had launched a new era for medicine in Cyprus and, three years later, it can be said that that the recognition and successes of the School had turned it into a landmark educational center with a significant contribution in the fields of science and research”.

The Chief Executive Officer of European University Cyprus Dr Christoforos Hadjikyprianou said that he was “absolutely certain that within a highly competitive environment where quality and innovation are the catalysts for sustainable economic growth, the School of Medicine and the University as a whole would become key drivers for better education, better research and better healthcare”. The Rector of European University Cyprus Professor Kostas Gouliamos stated that “We have created a benchmark School that exceeds the boundaries of Cyprus and is relevant to the entire region”. It was no coincidence, he added, that the School boasts two Nobel laureates.

Mr Richard Saad, the Students’ Representative, thanked the School’s Dean Dr George Markoullis and Rector Kostas Gouliamos for their dedication and guidance and described the launch of the annual event as ‘history in the making’. He added that “it will leave a permanent impression and act as inspiration to encourage us to work together to research, remedy, and heal”.

During the course of the one-day Meeting, the White Coat Ceremony for the academic year 2015-16 was held in attendance of the students, their relatives and academic staff.
