EUC Visit to Brussels – European Parliament

On the 15th of March, 2011 Dr Marios Vryonides and three EUC students (European Studies and Sociology) attended an event organized by the European Parliament  in Brussels titled “Ageism : Discrimination against young people in Europe – Research findings and strategies to combat it”. Dr Vryonides delivered a speech on this topic and our students made short statements about the issue from their perspective. Dr Vryonides presented findings from the European Social Survey on the issue of ageism focusing especially on youth. The presentation examined the following issues:

 

How do Europeans view

 

  • Social status of people in their 20s
  • Young people’s relationship with criminal &/ or deviant behaviour
  • Young people’s contribution to the culture and economy of their country
  • The way most people in Europe see certain personal characteristics of young people

 

This event was attended by the EU commissioner on Education. Culture and Youth Mrs Androulla Vasileiou, MEPs Mr Stephen Hughes, Vice-President of the Socialists and Democrats group at the European Parliament, Mr Claude Moraes, Mrs Silvia Costa and Mrs Antigoni Papadopoulou.
