1st International Conference in Safety and Crisis Management, Nicosia, Cyprus, June 2011

The 1st International Conference in Safety and Crisis Management in the Construction, Tourism and SMEs Sectors (1st CoSaCM) was held between June 24th – 28th 2011.
The Conference was organized and hosted by the School of Business Administration, EUC, and was sponsored by the Department of Labour Inspection, Ministry of Labour and Social Insurance, the Cyprus Tourism Organization and Cybarco.
The aim of the conference was to bring together the academia and industry and exchange experiences in the crucial theme of safety and crisis management. It dealt with the whole safety process, from the occurrence of the accident, and the management of its consequences to the management of the crisis.
The Keynote Speakers of the conference: Dr Brent Ritchie from the University of Queensland, Australia; Mr John Ludlow – Senior Vice President, Global Risk Management, InterContinental Hotels Group; Dr Gavriil Xanthopoulos from NAGREF, Greece; and Prof Jose Luis Torero from the BRE Centre for Fire Safety Engineering, University of Edinburgh, UK, are world leaders in their respective scientific areas.
Over 100 participants from 21 countries discussed 78 double blinded refereed papers in 21 parallel sessions. ISBN Proceedings will be published later this year and selected papers will be published in Safety Science (published by Elsevier, Impact Factor:1.44) and in the International Journal of Tourism Policy.
What has been achieved at this conference represents an important step in the field of safety and crisis management and this has been acknowledged already by the stakeholders, chambers and associations. It is clearly the start of a long avenue that already leads to the 2nd CoSaCM which will take place in 2 years.
