Posted: July 24, 2019

The Research Council of Norway has awarded a research grant of 1 424 035 NOK (153 354€) to the European University Cyprus’ School of Humanities and Social Sciences to implement the project “Valuing the past, sustaining the future: Education, knowledge and identity across three generations in coastal communities”.

The Project which received excellent reviews from the Council will run for 4 years from 2016 to 2020.

This project aims to provide a deeper knowledge base on the dynamic and shifting interplay between education, society and working life in coastal communities across three generations and five countries in the prospects of a sustainable future. More specifically the project will explore how education, identity formation, work and learning (with a particular emphasis on informal learning and local knowledge) are and have been experienced, transmitted, shared and practiced by boys and girls of diverse ethnic origins in three generation families. The project asks about the continuing symbolic and practical significance of local knowledge in coastal communities which are undergoing economic, demographic and socio-cultural transition.

The project will be coordinated by the Norwegian Centre for Child Research at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology and apart from the European University Cyprus, the other partners are: University College Dublin, Australian National University and The University of the Faroe Islands, all top-ranking universities in their respective countries. The project will involve fieldwork in all participating countries, comparative analysis of research findings, PhD student and researcher visits, transnational meetings, and publications among others.

At this stage the European University Cyprus project team is composed of Professor Spyros Spyrou (coordinator) and Assistant Professor Eleni Theodorou and could be extended further with additional researchers at a later stage.
